Mississippi Humanities Council’s
30th Anniversary Year

For its 30th anniversary, the Mississippi Humanities Council held a year-long celebration beginning in May, 2002.
During that time, the Council sponsored a Smithsonian Institution exhibit on World War II on the home front entitled “Produce for Victory” which traveled to multiple sites across the state between January and August. As a complement to the exhibit, the Council announced a special request for oral history proposals related to the war.

The Council developed a special Chautauqua of Mississippi Writers featuring Richard Wright and Tennessee Williams which traveled to junior and community colleges across the state beginning in September and continuing its tour throughout the fall.

The Council also developed new initiatives according to the needs and interests of local communities, including the development of a Hispanic family literacy program patterned after the very successful Prime Time Family Reading Time/Family Reading Bonds program which has been in place 1999.

Selected programs funded by the council during 2002-2003 received a special 30th Anniversary Award designation and were included as part of our statewide celebration.

To mark its 30th Anniversary, the Council also revised all of its major publications, including transforming the design of Focus on the Humanities and expanding it to a quarterly publication, developed a new Speakers Bureau and created an entirely new webpage.
