MHC Public Humanities Awards 2012

MHC Public Awards

Each October during National Arts and Humanities Month, the Mississippi Humanities Council funds Humanities Teacher Awards for teachers from all regions of the state. Each awardee receives a $500 honorarium and presents a special lecture in his or her discipline to the community. Humanities Teacher Award recipients are further honored by recognition at the Mississippi Humanities Council’s annual Public Humanities Achievement Awards, a ceremony and banquet held each February for the awardees.

Humanities Scholar Award

The Humanities Scholar Award honors a scholar in a traditional humanities field who has participated in Council programs, serving as interpreter of his or her discipline to public audiences.

2012 Recipient: Dr. Elizabeth Anne Payne

Humanities Educator Award

The Humanities Educator Award goes to an organization whose work moves beyond the classroom and uses innovative techniques and formats to reach a wide audience with the ideas and techniques of the humanities.

2012 Recipient: Rachel Jarman

Preserver of Mississippi Culture

Recognizes an individual or organization for extraordinary efforts to protect and promote the cultural traditions and assets of the state.

2012 Recipients: Edie Greene & Mississippi Public Broadcasting; Shugana Williams & Katrina Research Center

Humanities Partner Award

Recognizes an individual or an organization that has collaborated with the MHC to provide programs, allowing the Council to broaden its scope and/or audiences.

2012 Recipient: Beverly Norris & the Columbus Arts Council

Special Recognition Awards

From time to time, individuals or groups carry out work for the public humanities that does not fit the above categories. To recognize these contributions, MHC presents Special Recognition Awards.
