Summary:
In 1819, the American Mission Board answered the reported call of the Choctaw Indians for Christian missionaries to come to the new state of Mississippi where the Mayhew Mission was established. The mission declined following the Treaty of Dancing Rabbit Creek and the removal of the Choctaws to Oklahoma, but the influence of the mission continued throughout the nineteenth century as former teachers and students became state leaders in Mississippi and territorial leaders in Oklahoma. Slide illustrations show the countryside and burial ground for both missionaries and Native Americans, the only visible remains of the mission as it exists today.
