| Dr. Willis Lott It is a privilege to serve as Chair of The Mississippi Humanities Council. With the MHC, I have traveled throughout the state and nation and witnessed the appreciation our citizens have for the work of the Council. Though I am a native Mississippian, my eyes have been opened to a multitude of experiences that are inspiring, as well as educational. The twenty-two volunteer members of the Council are a wonderful group of people, dedicated to supporting public programs in traditional fields such as literature, history, philosophy, archaeology, languages and classics for people of all ages and all walks of life. The MHC mission is simply stated: “The humanities – teaching us about our past, helping us understand the present, and providing insight for the future. The humanities belong to everyone.” As a community college president, I have long been aware of the work of the MHC, but I have made the leap from awareness to sincere appreciation for the efforts of this organization as it sponsors a wide assortment of programs that educate, enlighten and entertain. But most importantly, these humanities programs bring together the common threads that weave a wonderful tapestry of human experience. This website introduces you to the work of the Council and provides information about how to apply for grants or how to become involved in our program in other ways. I encourage your participation and look forward to hearing from you. |
