SUMMARY:Water/Ways in Clarksdale
DESCRIPTION:The Lower Mississippi River Foundation will host Water/Ways\, a traveling exhibit from the Smithsonian Institution\, from August 31 through October 13. \nWater/Ways is a traveling exhibit offered by the Museum on Main Street division of the Smithsonian Institution. It consists of five free-standing display units incorporating photographs and text as well as numerous interactives ranging from basic flip charts to state of the art audio and video devices. Requiring a display area of a minimum of 650 sq. ft.\, the exhibit is designed for smaller venues\, thereby achieving the goal of “bringing the Smithsonian to Small Town America.” \nWater/Ways explores the endless motion of the water cycle\, water’s effect on landscape\, settlement and migration\, and its impact on culture and spirituality. It looks at how political and economic planning have long been affected by access to water and control of water resources. Human creativity and resourcefulness provide new ways of protecting water resources and renewing respect for the natural environment.

SUMMARY:Speakers Bureau: Delta Epiphany: RFK in the Mississippi Delta
DESCRIPTION:In 1967\, while visiting Mississippi as part of the Senate subcommittee on poverty\, Robert Kennedy cradled hungry children\, talked with mothers about how they fed their families and examined empty refrigerators. Although he was only in the Delta for a day\, Kennedy\, the people he encountered\, Mississippi and the nation felt the impact of that journey for much longer. What he found in the Delta both shocked and motivated Kennedy to work for significant changes in the nation’s food aid policy. It was a crucial step toward his decision to run for the presidency a year later. \nDrawing upon archival research and interviews\, Meacham’s presentation outlines Kennedy’s journey through Mississippi and what he saw and heard\, concluding with how Kennedy’s visit affected food aid policy\, what has changed there and what has not changed since his visit. \nPresentation will take place in Patterson Hall Auditorium on the NEMCC campus. \nSpeakers Expertise:\nEllen B. Meacham has worked as a professional journalist since 1991 and earned a master’s degree in southern studies from the University of Mississippi. She has taught in the University’s journalism school for 11 years. Since 2007\, she has been researching a book about Robert Kennedy’s visit to the Delta.
