DESCRIPTION:Join the University of Mississippi Museum next Tuesday\, April 14th\, for an artist talk with Thad Lee. \nThad Lee is an award-winning filmmaker\, writer\, and photographer. He studied English and Philosophy at the University of Mississippi and earned an MFA in Screenwriting from the University of New Orleans. \nHis photography explores abstract patterns in nature\, including his Murmurations series and experimental Moon Paintings created with long-exposure light techniques. He received a 2021 Artist Fellowship from the Mississippi Arts Commission and has exhibited widely. \nHe lives in Oxford\, Mississippi with his wife and son. Thad’s work is on exhibit in Unvanquished Soil: A Year at Greenfield Farm. \nNow on view at the University of Mississippi Museum\, Unvanquished Soil is an official America250 project and was made possible by a grant from the Mississippi Humanities Council\, through support from the State of Mississippi.

The property site\, owned by Rosa Foundation\, includes the 1847 living quarters and kitchen built for enslaved Africans and the 1851 family home of Hugh and Elizabeth Craft. Between 1779 and 1798\, Spanish administrators sought to wrangle profits and people in small outpost\, most prominently Natchez\, along the Mississippi River. Enforcing Spanish laws and customs in a polyglot and largely Anglo-American population proved treacherous and created economic and social dynamics that gave rise to more than one chaotic episode as people tried to gain influence and power along the Mississippi.

Our library is starting a fun new project called “Voices of Mid-Mississippi: A Community Time Capsule!” We want to save our thoughts and memories from today for people to open in the future—50 years from now\, during the America 300 birthday celebration! \nWhat is a Time Capsule? It is a special container that we will fill with notes and small items from people all across our 5-county area. We are putting the capsule at the Mid-Mississippi Regional Library HQ in Kosciusko\, MS. \nWhat will we put inside? We want to collect your handwritten notes! We will ask you questions like: “What does America mean to you in the context of our local history?” or “How has the library shaped your pursuit of knowledge and community connection?” We will also add things like library bookmarks\, photos of our towns\, and a special message from our local leaders. \nWhy is This Important? Your stories show how our area’s history\, from our towns to places like the library\, makes our community special. The library is a place where people of all ages meet\, and your stories are part of Mississippi’s bigger story! \nHow Can You Join In? DESCRIPTION:Max Grivno presents: “The American Revolution in the Gulf South” \nThe history of the American Revolution along the Gulf South is seldom told. Although most of the Europeans who called the region were sympathetic to the British — or at least hoped to remain neutral — the conflict soon engulfed the territory of what would\, in time\, become Louisiana\, Mississippi and Florida. This presentation examines how the American Revolution transformed the Gulf South. It tells the story of how the Americans\, British and Spanish vied for control of the Mississippi River and Gulf seaports\, and how the Choctaws and Chickasaws struggled to preserve their homelands by courting the rival powers. It describes James Willing’s disastrous raid on Natchez\, the Choctaw occupation of Natchez and the campaign launched by Spanish Bernardo de Galvez\, who conquered Natchez and Pensacola and drove the British from the region. The lecture also discusses the consequences of the Revolution for the people of the Gulf Coast In the aftermath of the war\, the Spanish and the Americans vied to control Natchez and the territory around present-day Vicksburg\, while native confederacies like the Choctaw and Chickasaw grappled with the rising power of the United States.

DESCRIPTION:Dr. Susan Gaunt Stearns presents “Natchez in the Early American Economy” \nDr. Susan Gaunt Stearns is an associate professor of history at the University of Mississippi. She currently teaches courses on US history\, the history of the colonial and Revolutionary era America\, the history of Mississippi\, as well as graduate courses on historical methods and teaching history. Her research focuses on western expansion and its relationship to the creation of the United States and the development of the American and global economies. Her book\, Empire of Commerce: The Closing of the Mississippi and the Opening of Atlantic Trade\, received Southern Methodist University’s Center for Presidential History’s book prize for 2024. She is currently working on a book examining the history of Memphis from pre-history to the American Revolution.

DESCRIPTION:Keepers of the Coast: Preserving Black History at the Pleasant Reed House OOMA will update the Pleasant Reed House into an accessible\, permanent learning hub for Biloxi’s Black history. Funding restores the historic front door\, builds three film rooms\, completes ADA-forward A/V\, and finishes the Joys & Blues of East Biloxi documentary. The rooms will loop three shorts—City Within a City\, The Biloxi Wade-Ins\, and Joys & Blues. Launching with MLK Day and Juneteenth programs\, these upgrades create daily\, barrier-free access for visitors\, students\, and elders year-round.

The parade includes local families\, civic groups\, youth organizations\, veterans\, military personnel\, and a selected Grand Marshal\, reflecting the values of pride\, unity\, and gratitude. \n  \nFollowing the parade\, the city will host a block party with live music\, highlighting Mississippi musicians and bringing residents together in a joyful\, shared experience.
