SUMMARY:Water/Ways @ Ocean Springs: Twelve Oaks Archaeological Dig
DESCRIPTION:On October 28\, join the Land Trust for the Mississippi Coastal Plain for a free archaeological dig at the historic Twelve Oaks conservation area in Ocean Springs. Archaeologist Cindy Carter-Davis will exhibit archaeological sites and artifacts associated with Mississippi waterways. The exhibit will include artifacts from a shell midden on the east bank of the Pascagoula River\, a mound site on the shore of the Gulf\, Cedar Lake Island in the Tchoutacabouffa River\, and more. An archaeological demonstration will also be available for viewing with volunteers available to answer questions. Children ages 6 and younger will be able to experience a representation of an archaeological dig. SUMMARY:Water/Ways at Ocean Springs: Gulf Coast Research Lab Sci-Cafe
DESCRIPTION:On October 30\, join the Gulf Coast Research Lab for its program “Sci Cafe: Walking Watersheds.” Dr. Jessie Kastler from USM’s Gulf Coast Research Lab will lead the program and discuss the role and importance of watersheds. The free program will take place in conjunction with the Smithsonian traveling exhibit Water/Ways\, on display at the Ocean Springs Municipal Library through November 30. \nWater/Ways is a traveling exhibit offered by the Museum on Main Street division of the Smithsonian Institution. The exhibit explores water’s connection to all aspects of our society\, including the endless motion of the water cycle\, water’s effect on landscape\, settlement and migration\, and its impact on culture and spirituality. \nExhibit hours are Monday-Thursday 10am-6pm and Friday-Saturday 10am-4pm.
