SUMMARY:Water/Ways @ Ocean Springs: Ebbs and Flows of Mississippi History
DESCRIPTION:On November 1\, the Ocean Springs Municipal Library will host Dr. Jim Giesen of the MHC’s Speakers Bureau to present his free program\, “Ebbs and Flows of Mississippi History.” The free program will take place in conjunction with the Smithsonian traveling exhibit Water/Ways\, on display at the Ocean Springs Municipal Library through November 30. \nThere are few states where water has been more central to its history and culture than Mississippi. From ship-building on the coast to Native American migration along rivers and streams\, from Civil Rights Movement wade-ins to Civil War strategy\, water has played a central role in how and why the Magnolia State looks and operates as it does today. From massive natural disasters like Hurricane Katrina and the 1927 Mississippi River Flood\, to great success stories like the shipbuilding and fishing industries\, to less well-known incidents where water played an important role in the development of small communities and towns\, the talk will tell not just the well-known water histories of the state\, but show how water has become an often overlooked factor in our past\, present\, and future \nWater/Ways is a traveling exhibit offered by the Museum on Main Street division of the Smithsonian Institution. The exhibit explores water’s connection to all aspects of our society\, including the endless motion of the water cycle\, water’s effect on landscape\, settlement and migration\, and its impact on culture and spirituality. \nExhibit hours are Monday-Thursday 10am-6pm and Friday-Saturday 10am-4pm. School and group visits are welcome but are encouraged to schedule a visit by contacting the library in advance at 228-875-1193. \nFuture Water/Ways events in Ocean Springs:\nNovember 6\, 8am-5pm: Living Shorelines–Master Naturalists\nNovember 7\, 10-10:45: Water-related story and craft time\nNovember 8\, 6-7:30pm: Teen Science Cafe\nNovember 10\, 9:30-11:30am: USM Marine Education Center tour\nNovember 13\, 3-4pm: Enviroscape activity\nNovember 14\, 10-10:45am: Water-related story and craft time\nNovember 15\, 3-7pm: Oysters & Seafood Safety/Terrapins & TEDs\nNovember 17\, 9:30am-12:30pm: Get N2RH20 Kayaking trip\nNovember 20\, 12pm: BP Oil Spill\, Eight Years Later\nNovember 21\, 10-10:45am: Water-related story and craft time\nNovember 27\, 6-7:30pm: Gulf Coast Research Lab Sci-Cafe\nNovember 28\, 10-10:45am: Water-related story and craft time\nNovember 29\, 5:30-7:30pm: How Storms Have Impacted Life on the Mississippi Gulf Coast\nDecember 1\, 10am-12pm: Lessons From the Way of Water for Native Americans
